"Titian-haired" is the manner in which actress Tina Louise is usually described. Despite her numerous comic performances, she prefers to be regarded as a serious actress; according to some of her co-workers, her preference in this manner often takes the form of an ultimatum. Louise was born near Brooklyn, where her father ran a candy store. She studied drama at Miami University, the Neighborhood Playhouse, and the Actors' Studio. A nightclub singer in the mid-1950s, Louise came to Broadway as Appasionatta von Climax in the original 1956 production of the musical Li'l Abner. Two years later she made her first film, the then-torrid God's Little Acre. By the early 1960s, Louise was shuttling between Hollywood and Europe, often appearing in productions of the shoestring variety. Louise is fondly remembered for her three-year (1964 through 1967) stint as Marilynesque movie star Ginger Grant on Gilligan's Island, though she despised the role and made no secret of it on the set. Nor did she wish to have anything to do with the Gilligan cartoon and TV movie follow-ups of the 1970s and 1980s, choosing instead to carve a reputation as a versatile, no-nonsense actress. Only recently has Louise joined the Gilligan's Island nostalgia bandwagon, though it still doesn't seem to bring her any gratification. During her Gilligan years, Tina Louise entered into a brief marriage with TV talk-show host Les Crane.

  • Created a health care company, "TLC" and marketed a parasol for women to keep the sun off their skin.

  • Covergirl of "Modern Man Magazine" July 1957.
  • Grew to resent her role on "Gilligan's Island" (1964) and refused to appear on any of the reunion shows following the series' cancellation (her character was played by Judith Baldwin). According to Sherwood Schwartz, however, she did offer to appear in the reunion show, Rescue from Gilligan's Island (1978) (TV); however, the salary she demanded was considered too high.
  • Liscensed to pilot a Bell 206B-3 helicopter.
  • "People walk up to me and say: 'Are you Ginger?' and I say: 'No. I'm Tina.' I do that to keep my sanity."
  • Although she is most associated with playing Ginger in "Gilligan's Island" (1964), she detests the role and has not appeared in any of the series' various reunion specials. According to Russell Johnson, Tina was told she would be the main star of the show when she was initially approached about doing it, and when she arrived in Los Angeles after accepting the offer, she found out otherwise. Johnson also recalls that while Tina remained professional throughout the show's run without raising a fuss, she "divorced herself from the show as soon as it went off the air."
