Biography |
Italian actress Silvana Mangano's earliest "connection" with filmmaking occurred indirectly through her romantic relationship with Marcello Mastroianni. Trained as a dancer, Mangano was supporting herself as a model when, at 16, she won the Miss Rome beauty pageant. This led to a movie contract, though it would take three years for Mangano to ascend to international stardom with her earthy, sensuous performance in Bitter Rice (1949). Though she never scaled the heights of her contemporaries Sophia Loren and Gina Lollobrigida, Mangano remained a cinematic favorite into the 1970s, working with such major directors as De Sica and Visconti. Long married to Bitter Rice producer Dino De Laurentiis, Mangano bore him several children — one of whom, daughter Raffaela, produced Mangano's next-to-last film Dune. Sylvana Mangano abandoned films in 1981 to mourn the plane-crash death of her son Federico, but briefly returned to the screen on two occasions before her own death at the age of 59. |

Trivia |
- Mother of Raffaella De Laurentiis
- In 1981 her son, Federico, was killed in an Alaskan air crash.
- Not having the same kind of drive as her two other Italian sexpot competitors, Sophia Loren and Gina Lollobrigida, Mangano's career was completely controlled by husband Dino De Laurentiis.
- Daughter of a Sicilian train conductor and an English woman.
- Her most famous role, the earthy Riso amaro (1949), had her out toiling ever so sexily in the rice fields. Lucille Ball did a hilarious spoof on this movie on her "I Love Lucy" (1951) show. Lucy is spotted by a famous Italian movie director and chosen to play a part in his new movie, "Bitter Grapes," that ends up with her toiling in her now famous grape-stomping vat scene.
- She separated from Dino De Laurentiis in 1983 and abandoned her career to live in Paris and Madrid, where she made tapestries. They had not divorced by the time she died of lung cancer in 1989.
- Measurements: 36-25-35 (Source: Celebrity Sleuth magazine)
- Sister of Roy Mangano.
